Estonian Immigrants mostly came over to the USA in the 1900s because of the Soviet Occupation there. Estonians wanted to flee and escape to America because the Soviet Union was taking over, and there was war. Around 1930 it was calculated that there were about 3550 Estonian immigrants coming into America, or already there. During the Soviet Union occupation the Estonians were escaping to first Sweden, or Germany, and then some would come to America. Most Estonians settled in the New York area of the USA, and in New Jersey. Over half settled in the Northeast, 20 percent in CA and the rest of the west coast, and 15 percent in the mid west. When the Estonians came to America during this time, there was not a common industry that they went into because most of them had been fairly successful before they came to America, so they were just looking to survive and not be sent off to Siberia. Estonians also were very into keeping their culture and language alive in the USA.
